Surry County Jail Roster

The Surry County Jail Inmate Roster is a public resource that allows you to find out who is currently in custody at the county detention center in North Carolina. Public information about current and recently released inmates can be found on the SurryCourt.us website. Additionally, data is available through the official Surry County Detention Center website, by phone, or during a personal visit. The roster is maintained by the Surry County Sheriff's Office; it is regularly updated and posted on the detention center's page. Searching the roster allows citizens to check an individual's custody status, review charges, and find out the booking date.

Search Current Inmates in Surry Jail

There are several ways to check if a specific individual is in custody at the Surry County detention center.

Online Search

  1. Visit SurryCourt.us to search publicly available court information related to the county.
  2. Visit the official Surry County Detention Center page and use the "Search for Inmate" feature. The system allows searches by name or booking number.
  3. If you are looking for an inmate transferred to a state facility, use the NC Department of Adult Correction offender search. This database does not contain data on county jail inmates.

By Phone

Call the detention center and provide the individual's full legal name. The dispatcher will confirm if the person is in custody.

In Person

Visit the detention center lobby during business hours. The visitor information window is open on weekdays.

A full legal name (last name and first name) or booking number, if known, will be required for the search. Juvenile offenders are not displayed in the public roster.

Find Surry Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment an individual is officially processed into the jail. This process includes photographing, fingerprinting, and registration in the system. Each record contains:

  • A unique booking number
  • Date and time of intake
  • List of charges
  • Name of the arresting agency (sheriff, Mount Airy police, state patrol, etc.)
  • Bail amount, if set

The fastest way to view this data is to use the inmate search on the detention center page. If the record is not displayed in the online system, a public records request can be submitted directly to the Surry County Sheriff's Office.

Court materials related to a criminal case are stored separately. They can be found through the North Carolina Judicial Branch court records portal or by visiting the court clerk's office in the county where the case was filed.

Search the Surry Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The roster supports two primary search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name in the appropriate field. Adding the first name will narrow the results if the last name is common. A few tips:

  • Check the spelling — even one extra letter can yield no results.
  • Try spelling variations if the last name contains a hyphen or apostrophe.
  • If the system allows partial search, enter only the first few letters of the last name.

Search by Booking Number

The booking number is the most accurate identifier. It eliminates confusion with namesakes. This number is usually provided during processing and may be known to the attorney or relatives.

If the Search Yields No Results

The absence of a name in the roster does not necessarily mean the individual has not been arrested. Reasons may vary:

  1. Processing is not yet complete, and the record has not yet appeared in the system.
  2. The individual has already been released on bail or by court decision.
  3. The name is recorded differently than you expect (e.g., official name instead of a nickname).

In such a case, call the detention center directly at (336) 401-8900.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Surry

The Surry County detention center roster is updated periodically throughout the day, but not in real-time. There can be a delay from a few minutes to several hours between the actual intake of an inmate and their appearance in the online system, depending on shift workload and processing complexity.

Important limitations to be aware of:

  • The roster only displays those who are currently in custody. Once released, the name disappears.
  • This is not an archive of all past bookings. To obtain historical records, a separate request must be submitted to the Sheriff's Office.
  • Charge information may change: the prosecutor may add, drop, or reclassify charges after booking.
  • Bail information is updated after a judge's decision and may not appear immediately.

To search for records of inmates serving sentences in state facilities, use the NC DAC database — it contains data from 1972 but does not include information about county jails. If you need court records — criminal cases, hearing transcripts, or court decisions — contact the Surry County court clerk's office or use the North Carolina court system's online portal.
